Genetic Engineering in Australia has successful developed effective hybrids of cotton, canola, safflower, leaf oil and cowpeas. Research in this area of science is continually ongoing. A variety of other GM ingredients are imported from other countries and added to common foods consumed by Australians. Some of the GM ingredients include soybean, which can be found in chocolate, potato chips, margarine, bread and biscuits, corn which is found in imported foods e.g.cereals, corn chips, gravy mix, corn flour, corn oil and corn syrup and sugar beet which can be used to make sugar. Over 800 trials of GE crops have been conducted in Australia, including GE wheat, sugar cane, grapes, pineapples, papaya and bananas.
